Delahey 6-Piece Patio Dining Set, Dark Brown:
Amazing value on a great patio set!
I'm a little shocked at the bad reviews for this set! We got it in the middle of last summer (July) on clearance for 75% off. There is simply NO beating Walmart on price for stuff like this, especially if you can catch it on seasonal clearance like we did. I dare you to find a wood 6-person patio set for less than $200 ANYWHERE ELSE!
I would not have paid full price for this set - not that it's not worth it, but if I had that kind of money for patio furniture I'd be shopping somewhere else. We have been very happy with how this set held up to HEAVY use last summer and how it weathered the winter time.
Last summer we used it daily - it got lots of food spilled on it, a little boy's chalk art drawn upon it, etc. The chairs were blown down in the wind in the autumn. One of them got left out by a sandbox til January (oops). The bench got hosed off on the highest "jet" setting by the hose accidentally, which I do not recommend.
Despite all the abuse that my growing family has put on this set, it looks great now that it's spring. I FOLLOWED THE DIRECTIONS though. We bought a canvas patio furniture cover last winter and dutifully put everything under it for protection from the Oregon elements. This has been one of the coldest, wettest, snowiest winters we've ever had too. I would never dream of leaving wooden furniture out without a cover in a climate like this - even a $4,000 set from Pottery Barn wouldn't hold up well with that kind of treatment.
The cover helped a LOT, I think. I wish I had taken the time to oil the furniture before storing it (per directions!) but the seasons got away from me and I'm lucky I got them under the cover before its started snowing/flooding. When I took it off 2 weeks ago the furniture looked no worse for wear under it - which is to say, well-used from the previous summer. I can not stress enough the importance of getting a COVER for your furniture!
I bought a $8 bottle of teak oil and took my time applying 2 coats of it on everything... what a difference. Like night and day. The wood was really eagerly soaking it up and drinking it in. It looks basically brand new again. I might do a 3rd coat on the table top since that is the most-used and worn in looking spot, but the chairs look great. I sort of prefer that silvery aged teak look, but this is not teak! If you want it to last, you're going to have to take care of it. We've had no cracking or breaking, though the legs do feel a bit "brittle." I'm going to invest in some $2 plastic furniture tabs - the kind you put on chair legs to avoid scraping hard wood floors. My patio is just poured concrete, so that does not help the chairs when they get dragged across it or pulled in and out of the table.
The one issue we have had with the set is that the wooden plugs meant to go over the screw holes keep falling out. Not a HUGE problem, since I am going to tighten all the screws anyway before Memorial Day, but slightly annoying to keep having to pick them up all the time. This could happen with any wooden furniture though - as temperatures and humidity levels shift, the wood expands and contracts.
All in all, I consider this to be a FANTASTIC set that we got a steal on. When we have company (we entertain frequently!) people always remark upon how great this set looks. No one can believe how much we spent on it! I am looking forward to getting some red seat cushions & cute throw pillows for the bench this summer. We got a striped patio umbrella already this year, and it looks so chic out there.
A big part of the reason why we ordered this set was that there were YEARS of positive reviews on it on Walmart.com at the time. They seem to have been deleted this year for some reason, so I'm leaving this one in the hopes that fellow budget-conscious yet chic shoppers know that it's a STEAL. Just like anything, you have to maintain it though. A little bit of effort & some small storage costs and this will last your family for years to come. I like it so much I'm thinking of getting the "conversation" set that matches for my side yard too!
